The Maryland School of Public Affairs is pleased to announce the next event of the Norman and Florence Brody Family Public Policy Forum, "Two Women of Peace: A Conversation with Lea Rabin and Jehan Sadat," to took place on April 29, 1999. Cosponsored by the Anwar Sadat Chair for Peace and Development of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, this program will be held at the University of Maryland and will be broadcast by Maryland Public Television.

Both Mrs. Rabin and Mrs. Sadat will speak of their divergent, yet tragically similiar lives. They will be offering unique perspectives on their husbands' contributions to peace in the Middle East, the changes they have witnessed, and what they have done after their husbands' deaths.

As influential women, Mrs. Rabin and Mrs. Sadat will discuss their thoughts on the role of women in Middle Eastern life and in the political world. They have been present at some of the most important events of the twentieth century and will also share their recollections of these moments and how they shaped their countries.

Lea Rabin is a resident of Tel Aviv and a great friend to many charitable causes. In 1948 she married Yitzhak Rabin, the two-time prime minister of Israel who died in 1995. Mrs. Rabin is vigilant in preserving the legacy of her husband, advising the formation of the Yitzhak Rabin Center in Tel Aviv to promote research and study. Additionally, she does much charitable work for autistic children, the Sheba Medical Center, and the Tel Aviv Museum. As a former first lady of Israel, Mrs. Rabin is a noted speaker for world peace.

Jehan Sadat is a senior associate at the Center for International Development and Conflict Management at the University of Maryland. Married to former Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in 1949, Dr. Sadat is a devoted activist for women and the disadvantaged. She established the Wafa Wa Amal (Faith and Hope) Society in Egypt, servicing handicapped war veterans and civilians. Some of the numerous awards Dr. Sadat has received include the UNICEF's Children's Champion Award and the Living Legacy Award of the Women's International Center. The widow of an assassinated leader, Mrs. Sadat, like Mrs. Rabin, is an advocate for global peace.
